Empowering Educators for Disaster Preparedness in Kageshwori Manohara

We recently completed a capacity-building program focused on school and community-based disaster preparedness. Organised for 26 teacher representatives—two from each of the 13 community schools recommended by the Kageshwori Manohara Municipality Education Department—the initiative combined practical life safety skills with interactive learning.

During the intensive two-day workshop, teachers refreshed their understanding of disaster concepts and gained hands-on experience in critical first aid techniques, including managing bleeding, treating fractures, and constructing blanket-sheet stretchers. To make disaster education engaging for young learners, participants learned a series of game-based teaching tools: Emergency Kit Quiz Game and discussions on the vital importance of emergency bags. Disaster Life Cycle Games focused on earthquake and flood safety. Paper Craft & Picture Story Modules covering earthquake risk reduction. Interactive Learning Tools, including the Shuffle Card Game, Earthquake Awareness Relay, and the Safe Building Construction Game.

On the third day, the trained teachers put their new skills into practice. They facilitated a dynamic knowledge-sharing event at Kanti Bhairav Higher Secondary School, engaging 52 students through these interactive games. This peer-to-peer event demonstrated how creative, game-based learning transforms disaster preparedness knowledge into practical safety awareness for the school community.
